About Zefat Academic College

Zefat Academic College is a rapidly growing institution of higher education in the historic city of Zefat. Established as a

regional branch of Bar Ilan University some 30 years ago, Zefat Academic College is now an independent Israeli college that offers greater accessibility to higher education in the Northern periphery where there are no universities. It is the sole institute of higher education located in Zefat, and has a profoundly positive impact on the residents who seek academic opportunities and social mobility. Located in the center of the city, Zefat Academic College brings invigorating student life to this unique city, and is an active leader in its development, and in the development of the Central Upper Galilee.

Zefat Academic College is a state college that cares about the people of the Galilee. The majority of our student body is native to the Galilee. The student population reflects the unique multiculturalism of Northern Israel with populations from all communities represented in the Central Upper Galilee. We are proud of the tolerant campus that we have created, and act as a powerful role model for other campus communities.

Zefat Academic College currently is in the process of building three full academic faculties: Humanities & Social Sciences, Law, and Health. The teaching staff is of the highest caliber, and is committed to the mission of bringing high quality education to the residents of historic Zefat, and its neighboring communities. About 2,000 students are currently enrolled in degree (B.A.) programs, and the number is expected to rise to 2,500 students by the year 2012 (10% annual increase in student enrollment).

Zefat is one of the most ancient and picturesque cities in Israel, and has the conferred status as one of the four holy cities of the Land of Israel. It was the center of Jewish life during the Roman Period, and it continues to be the international Jewish center for Jewish Mysticism (Kabbalah). The city of Zefat remains an important Israeli city with large numbers of international and Israeli tourists that come to visit the historic synagogues, graves of righteous rabbis, mikvaot (ritual baths), and the contemporary artist colony, all of which are located in its unique Old City. Yet, it lacks educational and economic opportunities, and a large proportion of its local residents are caught up in cycles of distress and dependence. Zefat Academic College brings life-changing benefits to residents of the city and to the surrounding area. The college's unusual location in the heart of the city only reinforces the impact that it has on the community.
